Stephen Colbert’s South Carolina Serious, Classy Republican Debate

Published

on

It’s always hard to tell how serious faux political pundit (and Charleston native) Stephen Colbert is being during his show (The Colbert Report on Comedy Central). For instance, in 2008, Colbert announced he was running for President, but only in the Palmetto State. It seemed like a joke, but sure enough he tried his damnedest to be put on the ballet. His efforts were ultimately rebuffed, but the TV host was still able to take on a couple other crusades – the March to Keep Fear Alive and his Super PAC come to mind.

Now it appears Colbert is planning to bring a Republican debate to South Carolina. It’s hard to tell if this will actually occur, but it has become a recurring segment on the Report. Colbert announced the event in response to Donald Trump’s original plan to host a debate. He promised his debate would be far classier and more serious than Trumps incarnation. It should be no surprise that the event is being dubbed Stephen Colbert’s South Carolina Serious, Classy Republican Debate.

Little is known about the event, but Colbert Nation is aiming to have the debate in January and you can count me as one Charleston resident who hopes the Colbert Circus ends up in the Holy City. In fact, I’d be glad to host Mr. Colbert and company for some Sweet Tea and Sticky Fingers (one of his favorites) afterwards. I could use some “truthiness” in my life.

Maybe it could be held at the North Charleston Coliseum? Or the Galliard Auditorium, where Colbert attended an event earlier this year? I will keep everyone posted on any updates!

You can read an article about the debate HERE, while a video clip about the debate can be seen HERE. Colbert’s official site is HERE.
