Elton John Rocks Coliseum Crowd

Elton John certainly doesn’t need the support of this tiny, Holy City-based website, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention his stellar show this past week at the North Charleston Coliseum. The Rocket Man may be in his 60s now but he definitely still has “it.” John played with a lot of energy and seemed like he was legitimately enjoying himself throughout the whole show.

The show kicked off with Elton’s band playing a few instrumental versions of classic hits. It was a fun start to the show as they rifled through “Smooth Criminial,” “Highway to Hell,” and more. Suddenly the band started playing some familiar sounds from “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” and Sir Elton entered the stage. Surprisingly, the show began only seven minutes after the scheduled start time – unheard of in the music world, especially for an icon.

John played a nice mix of his classic hits and some lesser known songs as well. Despite being only a casual fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire show. Elton’s voice sounded strong, the band played flawlessly, and the crowd was perfect. Some of the best parts of the show were when John interacted with the fans. He tried to acknowledge each section of the audience (including those unfortunate folks stuck behind the stage), accepted gifts from the front row fans, and even signed autographs during the encore break.

I left the Coliseum quite impressed with not only Elton John’s performance, but also his humbleness and appreciation for his fans. It was refreshing to see from someone as iconic as him. If you ever get the chance to see Elton in concert, be sure to do so!
