Foodventures: Bushido’s Spicy Tuna Roll
A little while back I decided to test out one of the spicy hand-rolled tuna rolls from Bushido, which became fairly famous after their appearance on the Travel Channel. The sushi rolls were featured on Man vs. Food’s Charleston episode.
There are ten different rolls, each one progressively hotter. I knew there was no way I could attempt the challenge, but I figured I’d just try one. Bushido has good sushi, so I was only nervous about how hot it was going to be.
I decided to order the Level 5, which seemed like a safe bet since I generally enjoy spicy dishes. As has become customary in my “foodventures,” I was wrong.
The first few seconds seemed fine – the sushi was tasty and everything was normal – but within about 5 seconds I knew I was in trouble. I could feel the heat start on my tongue and then quickly spread to the roof-of-my-mouth, gums, and lips. My eyes began to water and my face felt flushed. Yup, this sucker was hot.
I took a few more bites, but I couldn’t take it anymore. The heat on my throat forced me to start mildly coughing. I put the tuna roll down and quickly walked to the kitchen to get some milk. All of this made Ms. Holy City Sinner laugh uncontrollably.
Needless to say I will NOT be trying any higher levels of the spicy hand-rolled tuna rolls at Bushido. I will stick to their normal selections going forward.
