Potential payout in hacking lawsuit would be limited
The news just keeps getting better for the residents of South Carolina. Yesterday, I briefly mentioned that a law firm had already filed a suit against Governor Nikki Haley and the SC Department of Revenue. If anyone had dreams of cashing in big or even just breaking even on the costs of credit protection, they better think again.
ABC News 4 is reporting that per state law, there are limits on the amount public agencies can be ordered to pay. That limit? $600,000 per occurrence. And it has to be split amongst all parties involved.
That’s right – all the people who try to get money from the SCDOR through this lawsuit (at best) would have to split the $600,000. With about 3.6 million affected by this security breach, well, you do the math.
