City Paper’s Unconventionally Awesome Music Awards Show
The Charleston City Paper held their Music Awards Winners Showcase last week and I was excited to be in attendance. Despite being a free event, the City Paper did not skimp on the extras – multiple vendors were present giving out freebies and offering raffles, a makeshift red carpet where you could have your photo taken, many of the award-winners were present, and lots of fun was had.
Fowlers Mustache opened the festivities by playing a set on the Charleston Pour House’s outside deck. It was more than appropriate that the band was there as money was being raised throughout the night for their injured bandmate Nick Collins.
Once they finished up, everyone went inside to watch the awards ceremony. This wasn’t your typical stuffy, Hollywood-style awards show though. A MC casually read off the winners and handed out trophies to the winners that were in attendance. In between the announcements, some of the winners would play a few songs.
It was a great way to get a sampling of the local music scene and discover bands you had never heard play before. The night ended with a full set from last year’s Up-and-Coming Artist winner Old You.
Some of the bigger names, Elise Testone, Crowfield, Dangermuffin, and Shovels & Rope, weren’t in-house, but the night was still a blast. Check out some pictures Ms. Holy City Sinner and I captured below…
