Haley Finally Accepts Blame & SCDOR Director Resigns

Here are the top takeaways from Governor Nikki Haley’s afternoon press conference about the South Carolina Department of Revenue’s hacking scandal.

• Haley has accepted SCDOR Director Jim Etter’s resignation.
• Etter will remain on until the end of the year.
• Bill Blume will replace Etter at the start of 2013.
• Haley said the two prominent weaknesses found at SCDOR were there was no dual verification and social security numbers were not encrypted.
• Oh and the fact they were using equipment from the 1970s (SERIOUSLY!??).
• Haley, as usual, blamed someone else (the IRS) for one of those short-comings.
• Surprisingly, Haley FINALLY admitted the state could have done more…then promptly said the IRS needs to get their act together too (I’m paraphrasing).
• Haley said she would be more proactive in the future.
• She stated anyone who filed their taxes electronically can assume their bank account and social security numbers are compromised.
• Governor said all agencies will now have their cyber security checked regularly.
• Haley compared the hack to a hurricane, again, even though this attack could have been prevented and natural disasters can’t be.
• If your data was affected by the hack, you’ll be notified via letter. If you’ve signed up for Experian, you’ll be notified via email.
