2013 Lowcountry Oyster Festival Preview

A lot of these will be eaten on Sunday

Sunday is one of the biggest days in the Lowcountry – The Lowcountry Oyster Festival at Boone Hall Plantation. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association’s iconic event.

Charleston Scene was told to expect about 11,000 people to descend on Boone Hall Plantation this Sunday for the festival. You can expect an even greater number of those tasty mollusks to be in attendance – try upwards of 80,000 pounds worth! Sadly, with a number that high the oysters will be coming from out-of-state.

If you want something besides oysters, there will be plenty of other options available. Vendors expected to be in attendance include: Red’s Ice House, Zeus Grill and Seafood, Gilligan’s Seafood Restaurant, The Windjammer, Jim ‘N Nicks Bar-B-Q, Wild Wing Cafe, AW Shuck’s, Hyman’s Seafood, Dukes Barbecue, BlackJack Barbecue, Hubee D’s Tenders and Wings, Dixie Supply Bakery & Cafe, Charleston Cookie Company and S&D Coffee.

For entertainment there will be numerous events and contests, including some new ones. For starters, local band Not So Serious will be playing throughout the day while the popular oyster shucking and oyster eating contests make their return.

The new additions to the festival, according to the official website and Charleston Scene, are:

• Budweiser’s Build-A-Bar: A portable trailer that transforms into a bar complete with plasma screen televisions.

• The Pluff Mudd Circus: Entertainment for kids and families. Circus-type acts, clowns and a balloon artist.

• JetBlue giveaway: Every hour, JetBlue will be giving away free flights.
