Charleston’s Favorite Sons Celebrate B-Days Today
Two of the Holy City’s most famous natives, Stephen Colbert and Darius Rucker, are celebrating birthdays today.
Colbert of The Colbert Report turns 49 today. He grew up in James Island and attended Porter-Gaud. His father, James, was the first vice president for academic affairs at MUSC. A library on the hospital’s complex is named after him. Stephen’s mother, Lorna, still lives in the area.
His sister, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, recently ran for a congressional seat in the state’s first district, but lost to Mark Sanford.
Rucker, the other Charleston star celebrating a birthday today, turns 47. He grew up in the area and attended the University of South Carolina. While at the school, he formed Hootie & the Blowfish with some friends. Rucker now has a successful solo career.
Happy Birthday to Charleston’s favorite sons!

Porter ‘Guad’? ‘Really? It’s Gaud.
Rucker went to Middleton High, which operated 1970-2000. Now the former Middleton building is used for West Ashley Middle. The MIddleton district merged with the St. Andrews district to make way for the new West Ashley High.
Rucker and the other members of H&tB have held a Homegrown Concert series for 10 years, making lots of school supplies available to Charleston’s kids. http://bit.ly/OkoWvj
H&tB have also run the Monday after the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament in North Myrtle in April. http://bit.ly/11E0Lmx
