Former RiverDogs Catcher Included in MLB Suspensions

Former Charleston RiverDogs catcher Jesus Montero was one of the 13 players suspended by Major League Baseball today. Twelve players have reportedly agreed on 50-game suspensions for their use of performance-enhancing drugs and their roles in the Biogenesis scandal.A lengthier suspension was given to New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who had refused to negotiate with the league. Rodriguez was suspended until the end of the 2014 season but is appealing the punishment.

Montero spent the entire 2008 season with the RiverDogs where he hit .326 with 17 home runs and 87 RBI. He was traded out of the Yankees system to the Seattle Mariners in 2012.

The other players receiving 50-game bans include:

  • Nelson Cruz, Texas Rangers outfielder.
  • Everth Cabrera, San Diego Padres shortstop.
  • Jhonny Peralta, Detroit Tigers shortstop.
  • Antonio Bastardo, Philadelphia Phillies reliever.
  • Jordany Valdespin, New York Mets outfielder.
  • Francisco Cervelli, Yankees catcher.
  • Cesar Puello, New York Mets outfield prospect.
  • Fautino De Los Santos, San Diego Padres pitching prospect.
  • Sergio Escalona, Houston Astros pitching prospect.
  • Fernando Martinez, New York Yankees outfield prospect.
  • Jordan Norberto, free-agent pitcher.
