Charleston Named Top Literary Landmark of the South

In news that may only be significant because it didn’t originate from Travel + Leisure, Charleston was named the Top Literary Landmark in the South. Publishers Weekly, a news magazine focused on the international book publishing business, created a list of the south’s “Top Literary Landmarks” and placed the Holy City in the first spot. The publication says its list is the “essential companion for anyone traveling through the South who also happens to love books.” Charleston was included for its historic ties to the Civil War and for being the setting to DuBose Heyward’s 1925 novel, Porgy. The book was later adapted into a play (with the help of George Gerswhin) entitled Porgy and Bess.
