12 Years Gone: 9/11 Events Around Charleston

Wednesday is the 12th Anniversary of one of the darkest days in America’s history. For many of us 9/11/01 doesn’t seem that long ago.

There are a few events around the Charleston area dedicated to the remembrance of that day. For those who can’t attend events, don’t forget about 9/11 Day – an event created by a “non-profit movement to observe September 11 every year as a day of charitable service and doing good deeds – and do something to brighten someone’s day.

Here are the events:

  • Open now – In the lobby of Capers Hall, The Citadel: “An exhibit of photographs taken by military combat photojournalists after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.”
  • 8:46 am – The Cathedral of St. Luke & St. Paul (126 Coming Street) will ring will ring their bell 11 times.
  • 9:15 am – The Art Institute of Charleston:  Marjory Wentworth reading a special poem
  • 9:20 am – The Art Institute of Charleston: Song performed by trio of students and faculty
  • 9:35 am – The Art Institute of Charleston: Comments by Retired USMC Colonel Eddie S. Ray
  • 9:59 am – The Art Institute of Charleston: Performances by Art History students
  • 9:59 am – The Charleston Fire Department (116 Meeting Street) will ring a bell 343 times, one for each NYFD firefighter lost in the 2001 attacks.
  • 10:28 am – The Art Institute of Charleston:  Begin reading names of those lost by Public Speaking students
  • 11 am – all afternoon – The Art Institute of Charleston: Sidewalk chalk blog for students and the public
  • 5:15 pm – The Art Institute of Charleston: Original poems read by Creative Writing/English students; meaningful statistics recited by Math students
  • 6:30 pm – Philip Simmons Mall Park: Without Walls Ministry and Hope Assembly Prayer Service followed by a cookout, book signing and speakers.
