Closing Ordiance Would Only Apply to New Bars
On Tuesday the Charleston City Council gave initial approval to an ordinance that would require new restaurants and bars in the Cannonborough, Elliotborough and Eastside neighborhoods to close by 11 pm.
The measure was put to a vote after many residents complained about an increase in late-night noise after a handful of new bars and restaurants recently opened in the neighborhoods.
The ordinance passed the first reading even though it would allow current restaurants and bars to be “grandfathered in.” This means the original sources of the residents’ complaints could ignore the new 11 pm closing time and remain open as late as they wish.
