Actor Will Smith was spotted in downtown Charleston on Friday night. He was first seen at The Bar at Husk before making his way over to Husk’s main building for a late dinner.

Holy City Sinner was in the Bar at Husk while Smith was in the restaurant, but spotted him on his way out. When Smith reached Queen Street, much to the delight of the small crowd gathered outside the restaurant, he hopped on the front of rickshaw and drove a woman down the street a few feet before turning back towards Husk. Smith posed for a few pictures before heading towards King Street.

Smith is well known for his roles in the Men In Black franchise, Independence Day, Bad Boys, Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend, and the hit sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Those are not called a rickshaw. It is a Pedicab. I know this because I am a Pedicab driver and I have to tell ignorant people all the time that I am not driving a rickshaw

Yikes, sorry to be so ignorant on the rickshaw vs. pedicab debate.
On an unrelated note, you can expect an “anonymous” complaint to be filed against you for giving illegal downtown historic tours. Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to say it was a pedicab tour, not a rickshaw one 🙂

Well that seems wildly unprofessional of you, HCS. And incredibly juvenile. Maybe s/he could have worded that better, but you should, as a journalist, do your research.

Sass, I’m not a journalist, just a blogger which is why I can joke around with Mr./Mrs. Stokely. By the way there’s a company in the city called Charleston Rickshaw Company. They look identical to the contraception Mr. Smith rode. Real journalists at the Post & Courier have called them rickshaws too. Seems it’s a matter of opinion/preference here. Much like any other regional vernacular.

Also for what it’s worth, Wikipedia says the terms are interchangeable: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickshaw

That’s weird the Interwebs says those 2 words are interchangeable. Which pedicab company do you work for and what is the difference between the 2… I must be ignorant as well.

If you want to get into the specifics, rickshaw means human vehicle, the term used for centuries in Asia. ‘Pedicab’ is the newer, American term and translated directly it obviously means ‘foot vehicle.’ So there’s the difference. It’s kind of the same thing…

Ignorant must be your middle name Mr Pedicab driver. Rude comment.

Do you also leave your pedicab in loading zones, rip cigs in front of A/C’s, and drive like a jackass? If so, you might be a rickshaw/pedicab driver

Probably not old Chraleston. Likely a trust fund carpetbagger that has never put in 8 hrs of labor. Not defending Stokely,he was somewhat rude. However, read into his comment a little. He is saying rickshaws are known for the driver running and pedicabs are better known as a bike. That simple. Ease up with the quick retalliation.

        More likely a Bike Taxi.

To the pedicab expert: we know the vehicle is a pedicab, but we call them Rickshaws to differentiate from the other two companies in town (Pedicab and Bike Taxi). Also don’t care where you work, I guarantee you don’t ride as hard as we do.

Rickshaw transportation has been a round for many years. I personality know one of the owners of the rickshaw transportation company in North Carolina and he is not ashmaned to be known as a rickshaw. Rickshaw name has been around for many years. Don’t mudbup there name.

You seem very judgemental. Most people would not know what they are called unless they lived there or drove a pedicab (Rickshaw). Lighten up.Those so called ignorant people are paying your salary. Be thankful for this.

    April 13, 2014 at 12:40 pm

Lol! Seriously, Stokely? Lighten up. No one cares what your little bike thing is called.

Let me help you guys here as a former rider (2003-2008). Blue bikes are charleston pedicab co., white bikes are charleston rickshaw co. So the initial post is correct. He is on a charleston rickshaw (white bike)

No matter what they’re called, the whole “bike taxi” bullshit is fucking stupid.

    • M. Ellen

      April 13, 2014 at 11:36 pm

Ryan, why are they f-ing stupid. I have rode one in Charleston several times and really enjoyed them. It does depend on the driver. I was
lucky enough to have had a wonderful driver all 3 times. I guess they aren’t for everyone.

These pedicab people take their careers very seriously, I mean they went to college and got a liberal arts degree for this okay. Let’s respect.

This turned from a pretty rad post about will smith and his engaging in some good ‘ole charleston fun, to a debate about the credibility of every screaming: pedicab v. Rickshaw. Cool article and who cares what the three-wheeled bike bolted to a cab is called??!!

YUCK> No one like Wills anymore after being weird and turning to Scientology, buying a Scientology school, and running into the ground. Sorry Will. You stink. Flunk.
