World famous deep-sea explorer Dr. Robert Ballard will receive the South Carolina Aquarium Environmental Stewardship Award on Thursday, May 8th during the 8th Annual Conservation Gala. The event will be held at Liberty Square.

The award recognizes individuals that have worked to protect the environment and the oceans. Dr. Ballard is being honored for his commitment to conservation, research, education initiatives, and exploration.

The gala will include cocktails, dinner, the award presentation and live entertainment. The event will raise funds for the South Carolina Aquarium’s environmental, education and conservation programs.

Dr. Ballard is best known for his 1985 discovery of the Titanic, but he also located the wrecks of the Bismark, Lusitania, and the USS Yorktown (the CV-5, not the CV-10 that resides at Patriots Point). He is also a National Geographic Society Explorer-in-residence and commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the president of the Ocean Exploration Center at the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT.

The gala starts at 6 pm. Individual tickets are $300 per person with ten-person table reservations also available.  For more information on the event, click here.
