One Charleston County Deputy Killed, Another Wounded in Shooting at West Ashley Apartment

Two Charleston County deputies were wounded, one fatally, in a shooting at the Gardens at Ashley River, an apartment complex in West Ashley. The incident occurred around 8 pm.

- The complex is located in West Ashley at 1840 Carriage Lane.
- The officers were responding to a disturbance involving a drunk man who was reportedly banging on doors at the apartment complex
- The suspect barricaded himself in an apartment
- As officers approached the the apartment, the suspect shot at them through the door
- One officer has died, the other is in very serious condition
- The deceased deputy was a male

- Deputy killed was Joseph Matuskovic, 43. He was pronounced dead at MUSC at 8:37 pm.

- Coroner says suspect is Michael Oswald, 38. He died of gunshot wounds, but it is unknown if it was self-inflicted or from deputies. Pronounced dead at 3:05 am.
