Charleston Hosts World AIDS Day Commemoration on Dec. 1st
On Monday, December 1st, the Charleston Area World AIDS Day Committee will once again hold a commemorative candlelight vigil for World AIDS Day.
The event, celebrated nationwide since 1988, is an opportunity to raise awareness about HIV, show support for people with HIV, and celebrate the memory of those who have died from the disease.
The Charleston observance will be held at 5:30 pm at the Naval Base Memorial at North Charleston’s Riverfront Park. The program will feature speeches from activists and a music program.
The candlelight vigil is part of a week-long campaign of HIV/AIDS awareness. Lowcountry AIDS Services and the Roper St. Francis Ryan White Program will offer free HIV testing throughout the week. Plus, the Carmike Theatre in James Island will host a movie screening of “Blood Brother,” a Sundance Award-winning documentary.
