Cynthia Hurd’s Family Establishes Fund To Continue Her Work
The following was released on behalf of the family of Cynthia Graham Hurd.
“The family of Cynthia Graham Hurd, along with her work family at Charleston County Public Library, are touched by the outpouring of support from across the world following Hurd’s untimely and senseless shooting death on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.
Many have asked how they can make a donation in memory of Hurd and her lifelong service to the community as a librarian.
The family is establishing a fund at Charleston County Public Library with donations going to promote educational programming at the John L. Dart Branch Library and the St. Andrews Regional Library, both are branches that Hurd managed during her 31 years with CCPL.
Donations can be sent to:
Charleston County Public Library
c/o Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Fund
68 Calhoun Street
Charleston, S.C. 29401
Efforts are being to accept donations electronically. Once in place, that information and link will be available through the library’s website – www.ccpl.org
At this time, details of the service and visitation have not been finalized. We will announce that as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, for those wanting to leave notes of condolence for the family, that can be done through legacy.com.

Cynthia was one of the people I knew who were murdered by a Racist with a Gun a week ago. Like many other Charlestonians, I constantly saw her at the Library…we always talked and sometimes just joked around. She was a true lover of books, an educator; Cynthia strove to raise the bar for her Library patrons, especially the younger ones. I hope to attend her funeral in addition to contributing to this Memorial Fund.

My mother, Betty O’Neill, was a friend of Ms Cynthia’s for many years. Through their connection at Dart, Ms Cynthia helped my mother found the library at Canterbury House. She was always generous with her time, her ideas, her creativity and her enthusiasm. I am so so sorry to learn that she has been lost to all of us. My mother died in 2014; she would have been devastated if she had known Ms Cynthia faced such cruelty after a lifetime of service, smiles and love. May she rest in peace
