Help Feed Charleston Families This Thanksgiving

The Charleston Basket Brigade, a local nonprofit that serves area families in need at Thanksgiving, has set a 2015 goal to raise enough money to feed 3,500 tri-county families (approximately 21,000 people) this Turkey Day.

In order to reach this goal, the group is encouraging the Charleston community to get involved more than ever. Residents can donate money (100% of donations are used to purchase food) or volunteer at the 8th Annual Charleston Basket Brigade on Tuesday, November 24th at the Charleston Area Convention Center.

The nonprofit says it costs $30 to feed a family of six, so if you can afford that (or more) donate online through PayPal. Each family receives a box of food that includes: a 10-12 lb. turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls, butter, and a pumpkin pie. The box also includes an anonymous letter that reads, “This comes to you from someone who cares about you.  All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day.”

If volunteering during the Brigade is more your speed, show up at the Convention Center at 7 am. Once there, you will be invited to help assemble and deliver meals to all of the 3,500 families in need. A full list of volunteer opportunities are available here.

In the past seven years, the Charleston Basket Brigade has raised a total of $429,500 and fed 14,339 families in need (approximately 86,034 people; as each meal feeds six people).
