New International Literary Festival Connects Charleston, U.S. to Charleston, U.K.
Last week, the Charleston Library Society and The Charleston Trust U.K. announced the launch of a new collaborative literary festival which aims to debut this November 2017 in the Holy City.
The festival, called Charleston to Charleston, will be modeled on Charleston, Sussex, home to the Charleston Festival, one of England’s premier literary events. Authors from all over the world will attend the new festival to discuss their works, sign books, and meet readers from the Lowcountry and beyond.
The Charleston Trust is a charitable organization set up to preserve Charleston, a property in East Sussex featuring a farmhouse that was the home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. It became the country retreat of the famed “Bloomsbury Group” of writers, artists, and intellectuals such as Virginia and Leonard Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, Lytton Strachey, E.M. Forster, and periodically, T.S. Eliot and Vita Sackville-West. Charleston, which is now open to the public, hosts one of the most prestigious literary and ideas festivals in the UK.
