Published

on

The Gibbes and renowned Southern painter West Fraser are throwing a city-wide scavenger hunt to find one of Fraser’s paintings hidden in a tree.

West Fraser’s, Painting a Southern Coast collection is currently on display until April 30th at the Gibbes Museum of Art. In conjunction with this current display, and in an effort to challenge dedicated and resourceful art patrons, Fraser began the “Painting in a Tree” project in 2009. He sends participants on a scavenger hunt to find an original oil painting hiding in a tree. Here are this year’s details:

How to participate

  • Clues to the painting’s whereabouts will be announced weekly on The Gibbes Museum’s social media channels and in the museum.
  • The first two clues have already been announced
    • Clue #1: Orient yourself in this street scene depicting Charleston’s Old Exchange building and follow the direction of the viewer’s perspective to determine whether your hunt should begin north or south of Broad Street
    • Click here to stay up-to-date on other clues

And if you win?

  • The artist pays it forward by giving away the painting, and in return Fraser asks the collector of the ninth “Painting in a Tree” donate to the Gibbes Museum once the painting is found. The lucky finder is asked to please contact Helena Fox Fine Art and the Gibbes.
