April 30: Rally for Trans Women of Color in Downtown Charleston
A community rally to address the rising epidemic of violence against trans women of color will take place on Sunday, April 30th at noon at Wragg Mall Park. The event is in response to a national call to action to celebrate, affirm, and protect trans women of color.
As of April 25, 2017, a minimum of nine trans women of color have already been murdered this year – four of them were killed in the south. Rallies for trans women of color have been held over the previous months in cities and towns across the country.
Hosted by a multi-racial group of queer and trans activists from the Tri-County area and sponsored by Carolina Youth Action Project (formerly Girls Rock Charleston), We Are Family, Southerners on New Ground, Campaign for Southern Equality, Charleston Area Transgender Support (CATS), AFFA (Alliance for Full Acceptance) and Charleston Pride, the Charleston event will feature speakers, calls to action, and an open mic for the public to share in the public conversation with poetry, spoken-word, song, and personal testimony. The purpose of the rally is to engage the public in a conversation about ways to protect trans women of color, build movements that include the leadership of trans women of color, and expand our political platforms so that they reflect the compound and overlapping issues that trans women of color face here in the south.
