Charleston County Public Library Hosts Amnesty Week in Honor of Library Card Sign-Up Month
Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will waive late fees for overdue materials that are returned during a special Amnesty Week (Sept. 18-24). In honor of Library Card Sign-Up Month, CCPL will also waive the fee for replacement library cards during this forgiveness period.
Patrons who return current overdue items in their possession to any of the 16 branches during Amnesty Week will have the fines for those overdue items waived. Overdue fines for items that have already been returned prior to Amnesty week and fees for damaged materials will not be waived.
This September marks the 30th anniversary of Library Card Sign-up Month, which is held annually to mark the beginning of the school year. CCPL joins the American Library Association (ALA) and other public libraries nationwide to highlight the value of a library card.
Throughout the school year, public librarians and library staff help parents and caregivers save hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. A library card is one of the most cost-effective school supplies available, as it provides free access to programs and activities, educational apps, homework help, technology courses and librarian expertise. How much money can you save? Visit the ALA’s Library Value Calculator to calculate total savings.
CCPL library cards are free to Charleston County residents, business owners, property owners, students, teachers of accredited K-12 grade schools, members of the military and employees of Charleston County Government. Out of county residents may pay an annual $40 fee to access library services with a CCPL card. Cards may be obtained at all CCPL branches and the bookmobile. Applicants must present proof of identification and current address.
CCPL cards provide free access to:
- Books
- DVDs/Blu-rays
- Audiobooks
- Computer and internet access
- Online databases including free learning tools*
- Downloadable e-books, magazines, audiobooks and music
- Streaming music and movies
- Technology training
- Programs for children, teens and adults
*CCPL’s digital resources provide patrons with an array of free educational materials including access to free digital subscriptions like the recent addition of the New York Times, online tutorials through Lynda.com, and much more.
