What is OPCON? What Do The Different Levels Mean?
You’ve probably seen or heard the term OPCON numerous times over the last few days, but may not have known what the heck it is. As we all prepare the possibility of Hurricane Irma’s arrival, it’s probably a good idea to get acquainted.
OPCON stands for Operating Conditions (OPCON) of the Emergency Operations Center. Charleston County’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is located at 8500 Palmetto Commerce Parkway in Ladson. According to the Charleston County Hurricane Preparedness Guide, “when the EOC is activated, Charleston County decision-makers coordinate information and implement the County’s Emergency Operations Plan during any type of disaster.”
The Charleston County EOC has five different operating conditions, which are as follows:
