Charleston Area CVB to Host Upper Peninsula Job Fair on 10/3

Published

On Tuesday, October 3rd from 10 am to noon, the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (CACVB) will hold their first area-specific job fair for residents of the Upper Peninsula neighborhoods. With support from Latonya Gamble, president of the Eastside Community Development Corporation, UP Job Fair will be held at Ebenezer AME Church at 44 Nassau Street, in the heart of the Eastside neighborhood.

Members of the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association (GCRA) and the Charleston Area Hospitality Association (CAHA) are seeking qualified applicants to fill immediate job openings in a wide range of hospitality and culinary positions, both full and part-time, many with long-term career potential. Employers such as Hominy Grill, Indigo Road and Hall Management Group will be present to discuss their job openings, as well as six hotel operators.

The idea behind this event is to find potential employees for current job openings living near these places of employment. This job recruitment effort is aimed at residents of all Upper Peninsula neighborhoods, including Rosemont, Silver Hill, North Central, Bridgeview and Eastside.

“When citizens are able to live near their place of employment, it can vastly improve their quality of life,” said Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg.  “Minimizing commute times and eliminating the need for transportation and parking arrangements means more time can be spent with loved ones and more money can be saved for housing, groceries and other expenses. I encourage those living in the Upper Peninsula who are in search of employment to attend the UP Job Fair to receive job skills assistance, help with their resumes and to apply for openings at the restaurants and hotels near where they live.”

The job fair will provide job-skills assistance from the SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department, Step-Up Network and Tri-County Veterans Support Network.  Additionally, College of Charleston hospitality students will be available to assist applicants in developing resumes and completing job applications.

The City of Charleston endorses this project and hopes it will serve as a model for future job-generating efforts.
