The small, dedicated group of Lowcountry volunteers that recently banded together to form “LowcountryLOVEforVI,” a grassroots charity effort devoted to collecting and delivering much-needed supplies to residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands victimized by the hurricane season, have reported huge gains in their quest to fill and send a container ship of supplies to the beleaguered islands for local distribution.

Collections of dry goods at what is now more than 50 drop-off point throughout the Lowcountry
are piling up, with more businesses signing up to serve as collection points each and every day.
Those items will be conglomerated at locally-based software company BoomTown, the event’s
main corporate sponsor, then loaded onto a shipping container that will be shipped to the islands
where the charity’s island-based partner, 501(c)(3) non-profit Project St. Croix, will take over.

According to charity co-founder Andi Cummings, the Lowcountry has responded to what began
as a grassroots charity effort.

“We have been blown away by the generosity of the Lowcountry,” says Cummings. “And it’s
everyone, both residents and area businesses, that have stepped up to the plate for this cause.
We’ve already made great strides in our goal to fill a cargo container with the dry goods our
fellow islanders in the Virgin Islands so desperately need.”

“That said, we still have a long way to go, and that’s why we’re so looking forward to the
donation party at CURE James Island,” she continued.

“We’re looking for that event to cap off what has been an amazing response from the
community,” echoed the charity’s other co-founder, Claire Young. “The event is not only going
to be a good time, but we also think it’ll be the rallying point the cause will need to put us over
the top. And, along with CURE and our other event sponsors, we think we’re going to be in good
shape to meet our goal.”

The donation party event will be held at CURE James Island from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday,
October 8. Family-friendly and Caribbean-themed, four bands will play at CURE that afternoon:
Sunflowers and Sin, the White Key Band, Kurt Emmel and Burntwood. There will be a silent
auction, a Caribbean-inspired menu and a cash bar, with each case of water, first-aid kit or tarp
(new or used) donated earning the donor a ticket for a free drink. Tickets for the affair are $20,
with all proceed going directly to LowcountryLOVEforVI and the effort to fill the container.
