Leftovers: Tidbits from the Food & Bev Community (10/20/17)

I created the “Leftovers” series to ensure I could share as much food and bev news as possible, so here’s the latest:

  1. Each Saturday starting at 3 pm, The Rusty Rudder Mt. Pleasant will host a weekly oyster roast. It’s $25 for all-you-can-eat local pit-fired oysters and Chef Mike’s homemade Brunswick stew. Along with oysters, guests can enjoy live music on the patio from 4 pm to 7 pm, $5 Blue Point Toasted Lager drafts, $3 for two Smoked Jalapeno Poppers, and college football games on the TVs.
  2. Sorghum & Salt is celebrating Heritage Foods’ Goatober this season with a new dish, Goat Ragù, in support of food sustainability and to help bring awareness to a growing problem facing goat dairies.
    • As part of the No Goat Left Behind initiative, Heritage Foods is continuing its seventh year of the project bringing together top chefs throughout the nation to raise awareness about the lack of use for male goats. Goatober was launched to connect restaurants and home chefs to one of the most widely consumed meats in the world.
    • The full new dish offered at Sorghum & Salt is Goat Ragù, Ricotta Gnocchi, South Carolina Tomatoes, Collards, Chili and Parmesan
  3. This month, Poogan’s Hospitality changed hands as partners Bradley Ball and Daniel Doyle took the helm of the Charleston-based restaurant group.
    • Ball’s parents have owned Poogan’s Porch since 1978. Most recently, he served as managing partner alongside his parents.
    • In 2007, Doyle joined the Poogan’s Porch team as executive chef. He became chef partner of the restaurant group in 2013
    • With this transition, Ball and Doyle assume ownership of Ball’s parents’ shares of the business. Doyle remains chef partner, overseeing the kitchens at Poogan’s Porch and Poogan’s Smokehouse, while collaborating with Poogan’s Catering clients to create customized event menus. Bradley Ball will continue to manage operations for Poogan’s Hospitality
    • According to the group, guests will not notice a change in menus or service with this transition
  4. Andrew Abernathy has been hired as the general manager of Toast downtown. He worked as a line cook and Executive Chef with DIG Hospitality properties before joining Charleston Hospitality Group as General Manager at Toast in September 2017.
  5. The Coastal Cupboard, located in the Belle Hall shopping center in Mount Pleasant, held its Semi-Annual Charity Knife Sharpening Event last weekend. The event, which benefits the Charleston Basket Brigade, a local Charleston nonprofit organization celebrating its 10th Anniversary, raised $3,052 toward its goal of $105,000 to feed 3,500 Charleston Tri-County families (approximately 21,000 people) again this year for Thanksgiving.
  6. Tijuana Flats, the fast-casual Tex-Mex restaurant in Summerville, is hosting its first-ever “Day of Outrageousness” on Saturday, October 21st.  During this one-day event, guests will be asked to participate in “Flat Outrageous” tasks and/or wear wacky clothing in exchange for a free Flat Outrageous street taco and Flats signature chips. Additionally, Tijuana Flats will debut a specialty menu item, the “Monster Taco,” weighing in at two pounds ($9.99) and available only on the “Day of Outrageousness.”
In addition to rewarding guests who dress in wacky clothing (taco hats, wild patterns, etc.), Tijuana Flats employees will invite guests to perform outrageous tasks, such as playing Twister against a manager or participating in a game of tortilla Frisbee. Guests will also be encouraged to suggest their own zany, outrageous tasks to win a free street taco from the “Flat Outrageous” menu. Click here for more info.
  7. Edmund’s Oast Brewing Co. is organizing a Hop Skull-themed pumpkin carving competition from October 21st to 28th. Participants are asked to carve a pumpkin with their best version of the brewery’s logo, bring it in for display, and to compete to win the Grand Prize. All participants over the age of 21 will receive a free beer (Beers offered for free are 1-5 on tap), and the overall Grand Prize winner receives a free crowler each week for a year! All pumpkins must be turned in by Saturday, October 28th for consideration.
  8. On Saturday, November 11th (Veteran’s Day), participating Krystal locations will provide a free sausage biscuit to each person who presents a military ID (including those in a military uniform), from 6 am to 11 am. No other purchase is necessary, and the free biscuit is available both in-store and via the drive-thru for a limited time only.
