Duke Energy Foundation Grant Provides SC Aquarium Rovers to Marion County Students

A $25,000 grant to the South Carolina Aquarium from the Duke Energy Foundation is providing every student at Marion Intermediate School a complimentary, interactive Aquarium Rovers program, an environmental science outreach program that includes a hands-on animal encounter. This marks the second consecutive year the South Carolina Aquarium and the Duke Energy Foundation have partnered to bring the Aquarium Rovers program to students in Marion County, ensuring every student in South Carolina has the opportunity to experience the Aquarium, regardless of their financial means or access to transportation for educational field trips.

“We are dedicated to protecting the natural beauty of South Carolina and being good stewards of the environment,” said Mindy Taylor, government and community relations manager for Duke Energy. “By supporting organizations like the South Carolina Aquarium, we can help protect and restore wildlife and natural resources, and support quality environmental education programs in our state.”

South Carolina Aquarium Rovers travels throughout the state to bring interactive learning to inspire all ages to care for water, wildlife and wild places. Each program aligns with state education standards in science. The Duke Energy Foundation supports communities where Duke Energy’s customers live and work, in part, by fostering children’s interest in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

“We are thrilled to bring our Aquarium Rovers program to the students at Marion Intermediate School,” said Beth Demas, South Carolina Aquarium distance education programs manager. “It’s exciting to see how engaged the students become in learning about the animals and their importance to the natural world.”

Aquarium educators will lead third-, fourth- and fifth-graders through the Food Chain Survival program. Students will interact with live examples of consumers, decomposers and apex predators as they learn how plants and animals use their adaptations to survive. Additionally, the distance-education grant from the Duke Energy Foundation will provide classroom programs to the seventh-grade class at Johnakin Middle School in 2018.
