ACBA Offers Graphic Design, Country Houses, Landscape Planning, and More

Starting in February 2018 the American College of the Building Arts (ACBA) will offer six-week public evening courses.  The spring evening courses are intended for beginners seeking to increase or deepen their knowledge of the built environment.

Courses meet once a week in the evening to accommodate those who work regular business hours. Each course runs during one of two Sessions: Session 1 runs from February 5 – March 16 and Session 2 runs from March 26 – May 4. Tuition for each course is $250.

Ana Casados-Gonzalez, Master of Landscape Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture, will teach Level I (Session 1)  and Level II (Session 2) of  “Computer Graphic Presentations & Marketing Media.” In Level I, students were learn how to compose compelling and creative graphic design using graphic design softwares and how to market their ideas to the maximum potential. Level II will cover the underlying principles and theory in Graphic Design and Marketing, as higher level understanding of design composition and both analog and digital mediums are integrated into the curriculum.

Curtis Estes, AIA, Master of Architecture, will teach “The English Country House” will during Session 1 and “Great American Country Houses” during Session 2. In both courses, students will discover the architecture, interiors, and decorative arts of English or Great American Country Houses.  

Alejandro Gonzalez, Bachelor of Architecture, will also be teaching two classes. “Small-Scale Residential Real Estate Development,” taught during Session 1, will involve the principles of Real Estate (RE) Development: Project Initiation, Project Conception, Project Management, and Project Marketing. “Advanced Real Estate Development,” taught during Session 2, is designed to facilitate advanced learning of the practice of RE Development in both small and mid scale residential and commercial real estate, involving a ‘real-life’ Case Study Project.

Allison Coliskey and Cary Briggs will teach “Charleston Brick and Decorative Ironwork” during Session 2. Students will discover the rich history of the brick and iron building trades while getting their hands dirty. The program is focused on the history of these two very old trades and their relevance in the 21st century.  The class includes demonstrations, hands-on participation, group discussions and 2 field trips.

“Landscape Architectural Planning for Your Garden” will be taught during Session 2 by Sanford Byers, Landscape Architect, Architect, RLA, RA. Students will learn the step by step process for planning small gardens or residential landscapes. The course will involve developing a plan from start to finish on a site students choose to design.
