1. Germany’s Julia Goerges has committed to play the 2018 Volvo Car Open, just days after breaking into the WTA’s top 10 and reaching the semifinals in the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy. Goerges already won the ASB Classic earlier this year, where she defeated now World No. 1 and Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki in the final. She joins Caroline Garcia, Johanna Konta, Sloane Stephens, Petra Kvitová, Madison Keys, Daria Kasatkina, Shelby Rogers and CiCi Bellis in the Charleston, South Carolina field. The Volvo Car Open will take place March 31 – April 8, 2018 at the Family Circle Tennis Center.

2. The Taylor Music Group will present a Benefit Concert entitled “Rob, Mary and Friends”
   at 7 pm on February 19 at Circular Congregation Church. The evening will include performances by well-known Charleston singers and instrumentalists such as baritone David Templeton; cello-piano duo Natalia Khoma and Volodymyr Vynnytsky; folk specialist Bart Saylor, recorder player and harpist Jim Carrier; as well as performances by singers from the Taylor Festival Choir, accompanied by Jennifer McPherson. The full Taylor Festival Choir will perform as well. The evening will be hosted by Mary and Rob Taylor—who will also perform. A Silent Auction will conclude the evening.Recently chosen to perform a feature concert and the prestigious Raymond W. Brock commissioned work at the 12-state ACDA Southern Division convention, this concert will assist the Taylor Festival Choir cover costs as they represent Charleston at this prestigious conference. 3. The College of Charleston will host the Second Annual German-American Business Summit from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018. The one-day event will take place in the Stern Center Ballroom, 71 George St.The Summit aims to address issues facing the German-American business community. This year’s event will focus on innovation in manufacturing.German industries are making a tremendous impact on the state of South Carolina, and the trend is only poised to continue, says Morgan Koerner, chair of the department of German and Russian Studies and associate professor of German at the College of Charleston.“The presence of German-American businesses in South Carolina is truly astonishing and something we can all be very proud of,” says Koerner. “We created the summit to provide a space for companies to interact with one another, but also with the College of Charleston.”Those interested in registering and securing a seat at the summit should contact John King at king1@cofc.edu.The full event agenda is available here.

4. February is national Heart Health month and O2 Fitness Clubs is delighted to offer a number of new initiatives for current and  prospective members.

   February Events Include:

   FEBRUARY 10, Tryout the Trainers

   The first-ever Personal Trainer Tryout will feature a five minute workout with a team of O2 Fitness trainers. During each session, members can learn different trainers’ personalities and choose which suits their style. The times and sign-up locations are as follows:

   • 10:00 a.m. & 12:00 p.m.: Dorchester Road, Park West

   • 10:00 a.m. & 12:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m.: James Island, Goose Creek, Johnnie Dodds

   FEBRUARY 12 – 18, Bring a Buddy

   Throughout this week, O2 Fitness members may bring a friend to an already scheduled personal training session and workout together.

   FEBRUARY 17, Gym & Juice

   From 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 17th, O2 Fitness is offering free 15 minute class samples and has partnered with local juicers to provide juice samples. Each club has a different class line up. Visit the Group Fitness page to see the full schedule.

   FEBRUARY 23 – 25, Heart Health Awareness

   In honor of Heart Health Month, there will be free admission to all O2 Fitness locations between Feb. 23 – 25

5. SC Works Trident is hosting a Special Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Orientation session for community members interested in advancing their careers in the areas of Manufacturing, Logistics/CDL and welding at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m on Feb. 8 at 1930 Hanahan Road, North Charleston.

   The free WIOA session does not require registration beforehand and will benefit those looking to improve their skills for the industry with the most available opportunities in the Trident region.

6. The Footlight Players hired long-time thespian Brian Porter as executive director of Charleston’s longest-producing theatre company. Porter spent the last decade on staff at Charleston Stage, most recently as director of administration where he oversaw daily operations of the professional theatre company.

   Porter replaces Jane Broadwater, who retired in January after serving three years as executive director.
