Theatre Charleston, a league of theatres that promote and advocate the arts, has announced their participation in a national campaign of theater activism to end gun violence. Nine Charleston theaters are currently supporting the event.

On Monday, April 23rd at 7:30 pm, the local theaters will join together to present a reading of Natural Shocks, a new one-woman play by Lauren Gunderson, at the Threshold Rep Theatre.

The local reading is open to the public and will be followed by a discussion. A suggested donation of $20 will be donated to the Emanuel AME Church Memorial Fund to honor the victims of the June 2015 shooting.

Spearheaded by Kristen Kos, the Artistic Director at South of Broadway Theatre, the event offers a chance for discussion, activism, and artistic relevance.

Charleston theatres in support of the advocacy event (to date) include:

  • 5th Wall Productions
  • Art Forms and Theatre Concepts
  • Deuce Theatre
  • Midtown Productions
  • Threshold Repertory Theatre
  • PURE Theatre
  • South of Broadway Theatre
  • Storytree Children’s Theatre
  • The Village Repertory Company

Based on Hamlet’s line, “To be or not to be,” Natural Shocks bursts to life when we meet a woman waiting out an imminent tornado in her basement. She overflows with quirks, stories, and a final secret that puts the reality of guns in America in your very lap.

The play will be presented in over 85 theaters and venues (to date) across the country from April 19th to 23rd.

Lauren Gunderson has been named the most produced playwright in America by American Theatre Magazine in 2018 and has been called “America’s most popular playwright” by The New Yorker.
