Myrtle Beach-Based Company Brings One-Woman Show About Drone WarFare to Piccolo Spoleto Festival
The Myrtle Beach-based Boots on the Ground Theater will remount its production of Grounded as part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston. The thrilling one-woman drama will be performed Monday, June 4, 2018 through Wednesday June 6, 2018 at PURE Theatre.
All performances are at 8 pm and will feature a post-show discussion led by the College of Charleston Department of Veteran and Military Student Services. The show was presented last summer at Atlantic Stage here in the Grand Strand and featured a partnership with the Myrtle Beach Vet Center. Shortly after their engagement in Myrtle Beach, the production toured to Fredericksburg, VA.
After her career in the sky is put to an end, an ace fighter pilot is reassigned to operating drones from a windowless trailer in Nevada. Her 12-hour shifts hunting terrorists in the Middle East are followed by 12 hours at home, attempting to find stability within suburbia. As the pressure to track a high-profile target intensifies, the boundaries begin to blur between the desert she lives in and the one she patrols half a world away. Winner of the Smith Prize for Political Theatre, George Brant’s Grounded pulses with ferocity, empathy, and lyricism while confronting the chasm between warfare and homecomings. This production features strong language and mature themes.
Every performance of Grounded features a post-show discussion led by Jessica Wilkes, U.S. Air Force Veteran and Program Coordinator for Veteran and Military Student Services at the College of Charleston. These conversations dive headfirst into addressing issues that surround the play, including drone ethics, moral injury, PTSD, identity, the family unit, homecomings, and more. Counselors will be on-site to provide support in order to make the show accessible for all military personnel and veterans who wish to attend production.
Tickets are $21 for the public, and $16 for veterans and students with a valid ID. Tickets can be purchased online at piccolospoleto.com, by phone at (866) 811-4111, or in person at the Piccolo Spoleto Box Office at the Gaillard Center (95 Calhoun Street).
