Spoleto Festival USA Reveals 2018 Poster
General Director Nigel Redden today revealed the 2018 Spoleto Festival USA poster (right), featuring the work of renowned British painter, David Hockney.
The painting, “Hither and Dither”, received its first public showing at the Pace Gallery in New York as part of the exhibition “David Hockney: Something New in Painting (and Photography) [and even Printing]” that opened April 5, 2018, and is on view until May 12th.
“In addition to being a prolific painter, David has created a number of set and costume designs for opera houses worldwide,” Redden said via a press release. “This is the third time his work appears on Spoleto posters, and we are very thankful for his generosity.”
The 2018 poster is now available for $35 at the Festival box office, located in the Charleston Gaillard Center (open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm), online, or by calling 843-579-3100.
Since 1977, Spoleto Festival USA’s posters have featured work by such artists as Jonathan Green, Charles Gaines, Chuck Close, Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, Henry Moore, Elizabeth Murray, Bridget Riley, and Alex Katz, among many others. A gallery of past posters available for sale can be found at spoletousa.org. Spoleto Festival USA posters are limited editions and are not re-printed once sold out.
David Hockney
Born in Bradford, England, in 1937, David Hockney is one of the world’s most recognizable artists, widely known for his iconic images of backyards, shimmering pools, bright landscapes, and large portraits of friends and relatives. At 80 years old, the artist continues to create new work from his home and studio in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, often combining the distortions of perspectives of Cubism with the bright colors and thick brushworks of Fauvism. His multifaceted approach to art has led him to embrace a range of methods and technologies (including photography and iPad drawings), yet his work remains rooted in painting. Since his first one-man show in 1963, Hockney has received countless major retrospectives, recently at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met Fifth Avenue) in New York from November 2017 to February 2018. His work can be seen in current exhibitions at the Pace Gallery in New York; the L.A. Louver in Venice, California; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
