Going Places to Give 500 Bikes To Kids at Another Title 1 School By Christmas

Going Places announced that they have selected Sanders-Clyde Elementary as the next Title 1 school whose kids will be given new custom bikes, locks, and helmets.

The local nonprofit hopes to give a bike to all 500 students in time for Christmas. In order to accomplish this goal, they need to raise a total of $55,000. The first step is to raise $16,000 by July 15th and the remaining by September 15th. All donations, which are tax-deductible, can be made here.

At Sanders-Clyde, 85-90% of the students live at or below the poverty line and many come from unpredictable and stressful home lives. These bikes, combined with Mayor Tecklenburg’s bike path initiative, will provide the students with a source of freedom and escape around the peninsula, but most importantly, these bikes provide the kids with their most basic childhood right – a right to joy.

About Going Places

Going Places, a recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit, was inspired by founder, Katie Blomquist, the North Charleston, SC Title 1 elementary school teacher who created the GoFundMe in winter 2016/spring 2017, raising over $80,000 to get all 650 students in her elementary school a new bike, lock, and helmet.

Going Places will continue this work on a much larger level, providing Title 1 kids with the most basic childhood right – a right to joy. Going Places gave all 300 kids at Mt. Zion Elementary new custom bikes, locks, and helmets on May 1, 2018. This will be the 2nd bike reveal this year as a nonprofit, and the 3rd overall for founder Katie Blomquist.

The organization plans to expand nationally this year.
