Lowcountry Go Program Offers Commuter Options During Wando River Bridge Closure

Published

Commutes in the Charleston area are going to be brutal for at least several weeks, but an online tool is available to help residents organize carpools, plan bus trips, scope out bike routes, and learn about flextime and tele-working.

Launched earlier this year, the Lowcountry Go (www.lowcountrygo.com) commuter services program offers an array of relief options for local motorists.

Lowcountry Go pairs tri-county residents with real traffic solutions, such as first-mile and last-mile connections, transit routes, and park-and-ride locations. The convenient interface of the Ride Low Go web tool will also allow users to safely connect with others through carpools and vanpools – all while aiming to relieve traffic headaches in trying times. Reimbursable Emergency Ride Home funds are available to those registered on the site.

“There has never been a better or more necessary time car pool, ride the bus or find some other way to commute than sitting in your car alone,” said Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority Chairman Mike Seekings. “You have nothing to lose and time gain by trying these services over the next few weeks.”

A regional partnership between the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments, the South Carolina Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, large employers and stakeholders, Low Go’s goal is to reduce congestion on area roads and improve quality of life. It’s an especially important effort as the region faces gridlock in the coming weeks due to the Wando River bridge closure.

Those interested in the program, which is free of charge, can get started by visiting www.lowcountrygo.com and registering with Ride Low Go to explore ways to improve their commute and connect with other commuters based on origin, destination, time, date, or events.

The Lowcountry Go program also:

    • Works with regional stakeholders and employers on other options such as flextime, telecommuting and commuter incentives.
    • Offers regional ride-matching services for those seeking carpool, vanpool or schoolpools.
    • Connects program users to other sustainable options such as public transit, park and ride locations, and walk-bike options.
    • Provides reimbursable emergency ride home program for registered ridesharing participants.

Employers interested in learning more about Lowcountry Go and various commuter services options should contact Mobility Manager Vonie Gilreath at (843) 529-0400 Ext. 214 or vonieg@bcdcog.com. In addition to LowcountryGo.com, the program can be found on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
