Applications Now Available For Carolina Youth Action Project’s 2018 Rock Camp
The Carolina Youth Action Project (CYAP) is now accepting applications for their 2018 Rock Camp. The 8th annual summer camp will be held from July 23rd to July 28th at Northwoods Middle School. The end-of-camp showcase will be held on July 29th at the Charleston Music Hall.
Each summer, the CYAP holds a one-week Rock Camp for girls, transgender, and gender non-conforming youth ages 9 to 17. Campers form bands and take instrument classes in guitar, bass, keyboards, or drums and participate in workshops that explore ways to use music and art to address social issues that impact our communities. At the end of camp week, bands perform original songs at a live showcase event in front of family, friends, and Charleston community members.
Full tuition for camp is $350, however they use a sliding scale system to make the program as financially accessible as possible. No music experience is necessary and instruments will be provided to all campers.
Camper and Volunteer applications are due on May 30th. All applications are available online at: www.scyouthaction.org.
CYAP is a grassroots nonprofit that uses music as a vehicle for social change and builds power among girls, transgender youth, and gender nonconforming youth in Charleston. They develop feminist and anti-racist youth leaders through cultural organizing practices that blend music education, political education, and DIY media making.
They envision a South Carolina that affirms the voices of girls, trans youth, and gender nonconforming youth, values their leadership, and works collectively to dismantle the structures of domination, violence, and punishment that shape their lives.
