The Charleston Performing Arts Center (C-PAC) and the James Island Junior Theatre (JIJT) are gearing up for three exciting weeks of unparalleled musical theatre training for local youth actors age 9-18. Taught by the Directors of C-PAC and Broadway star, Judine Somerville, students will study acting, voice and theatre dance while producing a professional production, Hairspray Jr.

The 1950’s are out and change is in the air! Hairspray Jr. is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant-high with laughter and deliriously tuneful songs. Adapted from the Broadway production that won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Hairspray Jr. is a show that celebrates diversity and brings audiences to their feet with its positive message and uproarious sense of humour.

On Broadway, Master Class instructor, Judine Somerville, was part of the original cast and singing trio sensation The Dynamites, in Hairspray. She has a resume full of Broadway and National Touring credits and was the Assistant Choreographer for Black Nativity starring Forest Whitaker, Angela Basset, Jennifer Hudson and Mary J. Blige. She is currently teaching Theatre Dance at the Ailey School in New York City. Judine has earned the title of Ambassador of The Arts & Life by colleagues, educators, and youth around the country. Her infectious energy, honesty, and spirit are a testament to the difference she has made in the lives of others through the Arts and C-PAC is THRILLED to have her at camp!

At the end of camp, there will be 6 performances of Hairspray Jr. that are open to the public! The show opens on July 20th and runs through July 28th. Tickets are $5.00 (age 4-10), $10.00 (age 11-17) and $20.00 for adults.

The success of two prior Kids on Stage (a C-PAC youth outreach program) productions demonstrated the need for providing quality theatrical education and performing opportunities for James Island, Johns Island and Folly Beach Youth. James Island Junior Theatre’s approach to the rehearsal process encourages cast members to Learn, Experiment, Apply and Perform (LEAP). Hairspray Jr. is the last JIJT performance of the 2017-2018 Season.
