Moscow Ballet to Host Youth Auditions for the “Great Russian Nutcracker” in North Charleston

Moscow Ballet’s community engagement program “Dance-with-Us” brings the historic Russian Vaganova ballet pedagogy to American children in each city on the North American Tour. Moscow Ballet Audition Director Anna Trofimova arrives in North Charleston on Saturday, August 25th at 11:30 am to audition local dance students for roles in the Great Russian Nutcracker.

Anna will audition and rehearse children ages 6 to 17 years with at least 1 year of ballet training. Children’s roles are as Party Children, Mice, Snowflakes, Snow Maidens, and more. Auditions are free, there may be a casting fee. Dress rehearsal is on stage with the Russian company and children’s costumes are provided by Moscow Ballet. The selected children will perform in the Great Russian Nutcracker on Saturday, December 8th at 3 pm and 7 pm at the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center.

Anna Trofimova studied at the Vadim Pisarev School of Choreographic Mastery and took part in the International Ballet Festivals “Grand Pas” and “World Stars Ballet” where she was on stage with ballet dancers including Vladimir Vasiliev, Daniil Simkin, Svetlana Zakharova, and Diana Vyshneva. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from the Ukrainian National University of Culture and Arts in 2014.

Ballet Academy of Charleston was founded in 1993 by Mara Meir. Hundreds of children and adults in the greater Charleston area have been taught classical ballet in this small but serious ballet school.  The regimentation and discipline of classical ballet training taught at this Ballet Academy should give students new poise, maturity, grace and awareness of the body as well as education into the world and history of ballet – and the joy that being a part of music and dance can bring.  The school presents no recitals in order to dedicate total class time to learning and improving basic and advanced techniques and skills.  Progression through graded classes is based solely on the ability of the student to master the techniques taught at each level as well as having the physical and emotional development necessary for a responsible learning process

Dance-with-Us places 6000 student ballet dancers on stage to perform in the Great Russian Nutcracker side-by-side with 40 Russian professionals. Audition Director ballerinas travel to tour cities from September through October to audition and rehearse the aspiring young dancers. They audition age-appropriate student roles. Dance-with-Us is underwritten by Moscow Ballet as a community engagement program. Producer Mary Giannone Talmi developed the choreography for the Dance-with-Us program.
