North Charleston to Open Second Senior Center

Published

on

The City of North Charleston will cut the ribbon on The Senior Center at Northwood on Thursday, August 30th at 10 am. An open house will immediately follow until 3 pm and continue the following day, Friday, August 31st from 7am to 5 pm. The first day of activities and gym access is Tuesday, September 4th. The Center, located at 8708 Antler Road, is the second senior-adult oriented facility in North Charleston, servicing citizens ages 50 and up.

The Senior Center’s amenities and offerings will be similar to the Senior Center at Dorchester Road, located at 6255 Dorchester Road.  At 10,000 square feet, the facility houses an exercise room, gym, an indoor exercise pool, pickleball courts, four activity rooms, and a coffee bar.  Each amenity has been carefully planned to promote health wellness, encourage social interaction, support ongoing educational opportunities, and encourage participation and interaction among senior center patrons.

“The opening of this Senior Center is another stride forward as we continue to enhance our services offered to the community,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey.  “Over the last few months alone, we’ve opened new parks, broken ground on a new aquatics center, we’re set to begin construction on a multi-use indoor gymnasium, among other facility improvements.  Key community investments go hand-in-hand with an enriched quality of life.”

“We have been amazed with the participation in the five short months since the opening of our first senior center on Dorchester Road, now with over 900 members,” said Kim Ford, Senior Services Manager.  “We are confident this success will be duplicated with the opening of the new Senior Center at Northwood, further expanding our ability to engage our active adult community.”

The Senior Center at Northwood is strategically placed adjacent to the North Charleston Fire Department’s newest fire station, which opened in late July.  The fire station provides improved fire coverage and quicker response times for the neighborhoods and businesses of the north end of the city, and will provide community engagement and immediate response to any potential medical situation that may occur at the new senior center.

Friday, 7:00am – 5:00pm

I think it is a shame that the City would charge Seniors for the use of this center. Our taxes paid for it!
