1. Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center, the region’s leading resource to prevent abuse, protect children, and heal families, has announced the grand opening of the new Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center at Long Point. The completion of this new full-service center marks the halfway point in the center’s monumental campaign to transform child abuse services in the Lowcountry.

3. On August 16th, Palmetto Goodwill graduated its largest Hospitality Kick-Start class to date, with 11 students graduating the course and receiving a START professional certification.Done in collaboration with the Charleston Area Hospitality Association and the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, this free two-week program gives students the competitive edge they need to find employment in the hospitality industry. In addition to receiving a START certification in one of five line-level positions, participants receive hands-on hospitality training at a partner location and go through Palmetto Goodwill’s soft skills course. Interviews with potential hospitality employers are arranged for participants immediately upon completing the course.Palmetto Goodwill’s next Hospitality Kick-Start class is scheduled to begin on September 17th.  Applications are now being accepted. 4. On September 15^th & 16^th, The Powder Magazine Museum invites the public to visit a special exhibition, featuring excerpts of a letter written by South Carolina 18^th-century icon Eliza Lucas Pinckney.    • There will be an indigo demonstration on Saturday, Sept. 15^th, 2 pm – 4 pm
     • At the age of 17, Eliza Lucas began experimenting with indigo, a plant used to create a blue dye. Within a few years, she had planted a booming indigo industry in South Carolina. The public is invited to learn more about her life and how her knowledge contributed to making South Carolina the wealthiest of Great Britain’s North American colonies.

5. 6. The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) announced the completion of its Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH) fleet replacement program. The final two buses were made available via $500,000 in funds secured by S.C. Sen. Marlon Kimpson through the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

   There are now nine DASH buses in circulation. The service, which is available at no charge, covers much of the downtown area and is free. Ridership on the three DASH routes – 210 CofC/Aquarium, 211 Meeting/King and 214 Lockwood/Calhoun – totals about 60,000 each month.

   Each bus cost about $335,000, and the funding Sen. Kimpson secured was leveraged for additional federal resources by CARTA and Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments staff.

   DASH operations are funded by the City of Charleston, Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, College of Charleston and S.C. Ports Authority.
