Celebrate #StrawlessSummer Finale with Beach Sweep and Documentary Screening

Published

on

Join the Charleston Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation to mark the end of #StrawlessSummer with a special screening of the award-winning documentary STRAWS. The film is being shown to celebrate the efforts of hundreds of South Carolina restaurants and bars that participated in the #StrawlessSummer campaign. The screening will be held on September 6th at 6:30 pm at the Tides Hotel on Folly Beach.

#StrawlessSummer was created to reduce the amount of single-use straws making their way into the environment. Data shows that more than 500 million plastic straws are used every day in the United States alone, with more than 600-thousand being distributed here in Charleston County.

With colorful straw history animation and segments narrated by Oscar winner Tim Robbins, STRAWS (33 minutes) is funny and entertaining. The film leaves audiences with a clear understanding of the problems caused by plastic pollution. It illustrates how individuals, groups, business owners and leaders from around the globe are reducing plastic straw use.

“We are thrilled to screen this film,” Megan Deschaine, Strawless Charleston coordinator, said. “Bringing our community together to watch STRAWS will undoubtedly inspire people to change their personal use of plastic straws and other single use plastics, while also encouraging dialogue with businesses and community leaders.”

Prior to the screening, there will be a beach cleanup from 6:30 pm to 7 pm on the beach in front of the Tides Hotel, followed by complimentary strawless cocktails from Firefly Vodka. Following the screening, Linda Booker, the film’s director and producer, and other community leaders will gather for a panel discussion to educate and empower the local community to eliminate single-use plastics from their lives.

Blankets and chairs are welcome, as are coolers with non-alcoholic beverages.

About #StrawlessSummer

The #StrawlessSummer Campaign is all about making those micro choices, that can have positive macro impact. It is a challenge to merchants and consumers to consume less mindless one-time use plastic. Straws are one of the biggest culprits of pollution in the Lowcountry and beyond, and it is our ultimate responsibility to be good stewards to our environment. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, restaurants and bars were asked to make straws optional, and consumers are asked to ask for their beverages without straws. During the three-month span, more than 1-thousand restaurants from across the state pledged to #SkipTheStraw.
