Public Courses Being Offered this Fall in the Building Arts

Registration is open for members of the public who would like to try their hand at a new skill or hone the skills they have through six non-degree short courses offered this fall by the American College of the Building Arts.

Classes run one day or evening a week for six to nine weeks. No prior experience is needed, just a desire to see where your passion and creative skills can take you. To register, call 843-577-5245 or register online at http://americancollegeofthebuildingarts.com/OpenCourses.php.

Classes offered this fall include:

Introduction to Blacksmithing
Saturdays in October, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Students will learn fundamental blacksmithing techniques to shape iron with a hammer, anvil and forge.  Each class will begin with a demonstration of the day’s project, followed by hands-on practice.  Students will complete a forged hook, bottle opener and spatula, and leave with foundational skills for further explorations into the art of the blacksmith.  No prior experience is necessary. Tuition: $500 + $40 materials fee.

Introduction to Interior Design
Tuesdays, 6 – 8:30 p.m., Sept. 11 – Nov. 6
Learn the basics of interior design including design elements, principles, composition and process. Students will bring their own design projects toward realization. Class time will include lectures, group discussion, individual reviews and hands on. Students will produce process diagrams, plans, elevations, models and finish boards. Projects can encompass residential, commercial, retail or hospitality design. Tuition: $375.

Valuing Fine and Decorative Art
Wednesdays, 6 – 8:30 p.m., Sept. 12 – Oct. 17
Whether you are downsizing, doing estate planning or just interested in understanding the value of your family heirlooms and art, this course will teach you to understand if a piece be sold, when and for how much, as well as how to donate it to an appropriate museum or nonprofit. Learn about various art markets and how to properly move history and family legacy to its next home. Tuition: $250.

Beginning Book Binding
Thursdays, 9 a.m. – noon, Sept. 13 – Nov. 8
Introduces students to the basic tools, materials and techniques of hand bookbinding. Upon completion, students will be able to correctly identify the grain direction of paper and book board and work in a clean, methodical way with appropriate adhesives and materials to construct a case bound book.  Tuition: $375.

Real Estate Development
Tuesdays, 6 – 8:30 p.m., Sept. 11 – Nov. 6

This course teaches strategies and processes of real estate development in both small and mid-scale residential and commercial real estate, including a comprehensive look at commercial scale development principles and basics, introduction to finance, how to conceptualize a project, how to implement your concept, and how to bring your ideas to market. The term will conclude with a personal case-study project and a comprehensive presentation. Tuition: $375.

Revit
Thursdays, Sept. 13 – Nov. 8, 6 – 8:30 p.m.
Autodesk’s Revit software is building information modeling (BIM) software for architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, designers and contractors. Tuition: $375.
