AFFA Hosting Town Hall for LGBTQ Community and Charleston Police Department on Tuesday
In the wake of the recent attack on a transgender woman in downtown Charleston, the Alliance For Full Acceptance (AFFA) is organizing an LGBTQ Community and Charleston Police Department Town Hall. The event is intended to give members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community space to voice their concerns, lend their support and share recommendations for a safer and more welcoming Charleston. Charleston Police Department leadership is actively partnering with AFFA on this event and representatives from the department will be in attendance.
The event will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center (265 Fishburne Street, Charleston), and will begin at 7:00PM.
AFFA Executive Director Chase Glenn said, “When there is an attack on a transgender person in the community, it contributes to an overall climate of fear for all LGBTQ people in the community. Right now, there are members of our community who need to hear that they can trust our local law enforcement. We believe that increased dialogue and conversation is a way to strengthen our community. This town hall is a step toward more open communication, education and trust building between the Charleston Police Department and the LGBTQ community they serve here in Charleston.”
Members of the LGBTQ community, their allies, and press are invited to attend.
