Charleston Horticultural Society to Celebrate Football & Butterflies
The Charleston Horticultural Society, the Lowcountry’s preeminent horticulture education organization, will kick off the fall season with two distinctive learning opportunities for the month of September.
Vince Dooley Lecture
On Monday, September 10th, the legendary college football coach Vince Dooley, will kick off the popular CHS Lecture Series with his popular “A Garden For All Seasons” presentation. Dooley and his wife, Barbara, will be at the Charleston Museum for a lecture detailing his one-of-a-kind garden with a touch of football history.
Dooley, a national championship winning coach for the University of Georgia (1964 – 1988) is also an avid and celebrated gardener who authored Vince Dooley’s Garden: A Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach (right). Dooley will be signing and selling copies of his book prior to the lecture. The event is $10 at the door (free for CHS Members).

Butterfly Symposium at Middleton Place
On Saturday, September 29th, the Horticultural Society will host a Butterfly Symposium education event at the new Pavilion at Middleton Place. Butterfly specialist, entomologist, and past director of Cypress Gardens, Dwight Williams, will present an informative two-part butterfly symposium focused on plantings for Lowcountry gardens and the best plants for pollinators.
The presentation will include coffee upon arrival and a buffet lunch following the program. Attendees will also have the chance to win some plants and to tour Middleton that afternoon. Seating is limited for the event.
