Local Nonprofit in Search Of Halloween Costumes for Local Students

Published

on

Going Places is launching their 3rd program, “give a costume. give joy.,” to provide donated, “like-new or new Halloween costumes to low-income kids whose families cannot afford to buy them one.

There are three Title 1 elementary schools in West Ashley and Going Places will determine, based on how many costumes they receive, how many of those schools they can offer costumes to. However, their goal is all three.

The nonprofit needs costumes ages 4 years old to adult. Many of the 5th graders are as large as adults and need adult-sized clothes. They are also asking for hangers. Going Places has Halloween costume donation boxes in several locations around Charleston and the list is still growing.

Current list of costume donation box locations:

  • Wonder Works (West Ashley and Mount Pleasant locations)
  • Benefitfocus
  • Crown Leadership Academy Journey Fitness
  • KickFit
  • Charleston Taekwondo

All Halloween costume donation boxes will be picked up on Friday, October 12th.

Going Places will host a Halloween costume pick-up event at a central location to the selected school(s) in West Ashley at which the families may come with their student to pick out their costume. The goal is to get 800-1,000 costumes donated.

About Going Places

Going Places is a nonprofit that provides disadvantaged kids with their most basic childhood right – A right to Joy. Their largest program, “give a bike. give joy.,” provides EVERY child in a low income elementary school with a brand new, custom bike. Going Places also has their “give a surprise. give joy.” program which focuses on partnering with local businesses to surprise ALL staff at Title 1 elementary schools with their product to spread Joy to them. Founder, Katie Blomquist, was inspired to create the “give a costume. give joy” program when she was a teacher in the Title 1 elementary schools and noticed many students coming to school on the Halloween dress up day in their uniform, stating that their parents couldn’t afford to buy them one.
