Going Places Donating 600 Halloween Costumes To Low-income Kids

Published

on

Going Places has launched their 3rd program, “give a costume. give joy.,” where they are providing donated, “gently-used” or “new” Halloween costumes to low-income kids whose families cannot afford to buy them one.

Going Places will host a big Halloween costume giveaway event on Saturday, October 27th at The Citadel Mall (Planet Fitness entrance) in West Ashley where they will give away 600 Halloween costumes they have gathered to families from Oakland Elementary and Stono Park Elementary. Families from these schools only, may come with their student to pick out their costume (first come, first serve). Families will need to present a provided wristband from Going Places so they can confirm your child is enrolled in one of the invited schools.

The organization is still looking for volunteers to help at the event. Lunch will be donated by Home Team BBQ for volunteers and sponsors. For more information, e-mail katie@goingplacesnonprofit.org.

Going Places has had donation drop boxes at 19 locations around Charleston and will continue to collect costumes through mid-November so people can donate the costume they wore this year and organization will save it for next year’s giveaway.

The nonprofit needs costumes (ages 4 years old – adult). Many of the 5th graders are as large as adults and need adult-sized clothes. They are also asking for hangers. Current list of costume donation box locations:

About Going Places

Going Places is a nonprofit that provides disadvantaged kids with their most basic childhood right – A right to Joy. Their largest program, “give a bike. give joy.,” provides EVERY child in a low income elementary school with a brand new, custom bike. Going Places also has their “give a surprise. give joy.” program which focuses on partnering with local businesses to surprise ALL staff at Title 1 elementary schools with their product to spread Joy to them. Founder, Katie Blomquist, was inspired to create the “give a costume. give joy” program when she was a teacher in the Title 1 elementary schools and noticed many students coming to school on the Halloween dress up day in their uniform, stating that their parents couldn’t afford to buy them one.
