Charleston Basket Brigade Calls for Volunteers
The Charleston Basket Brigade (CBB), a nonprofit committed to providing Thanksgiving meals to local families in need, will bring the community together on Tuesday, November 20th at the Charleston Area Convention Center (Exhibit Hall C) to assemble and deliver meal boxes to roughly 3,500 Charleston Tri-County families.
Community members are invited to join CBB organizers and partners to volunteer and assist with assembly and delivery. Assembly starts at 7 am and deliveries, in which all volunteers are provided with a pre-set route, will begin shortly after. A complete list of volunteer and donation opportunities are available at www.charlestonbasketbrigade.com.
Recently celebrating the organization’s 10th anniversary, the CBB raised $120,000 and fed 3,500 Charleston Tri-County families (approximately 21,000 people) in 2017. More than 300 volunteers assisted with the effort. Since the organization’s inception, more than $745,000 has been raised, providing food to roughly 25,000 families.
It only takes $30 to feed a family of six to ten and 100 percent of donations raised are utilized to purchase food. Each box is filled with all of the ingredients necessary to cook an entire Thanksgiving meal – a 10-12 lb. turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls and a pumpkin pie. Also, inside the box is an anonymous letter that reads: “This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day.”
As the largest community effort around Thanksgiving in the Charleston tri-county area, the CBB is an event that’s truly for the people and by the people. The accomplishments achieved each year are truly a group effort and would not be possible without the CBB’s group of corporate partners – Carolina One Real Estate, who raises money and volunteers; Lowcountry Grocers Piggly Wiggly, who provides discounts on food and logistical donations; Communities In Schools who locates our families in need; and Momentum Marketing who handles all public relations, marketing outreach and event coordination.
The CBB is a 501-(c)(3) nonprofit. Individual and corporate donations are tax deductible and can be made online at http://charlestonbasketbrigade.com/. All major credit cards are accepted and 100 percent of donations go towards buying food.
