Buy Local Month is Underway!

Published

on

Buy Local Month, a grassroots movement to build awareness for the positive community benefits of supporting local, independent businesses – particularly during the holiday season, will run from November 15th through December 15th. The campaign is hosted by Lowcountry Local First (LLF).

In addition to urging the community to shift their dollars to local businesses, LLF is showcasing the many ways local businesses make shopping and dining local for the holidays easy and convenient with Buy Local “Easy Buttons.” This digital guide to easy local shopping consists of five categories: Clothing & Accessories, Food & Beverage, Toys & Other Gifts, For the Home, and Personal Services & Experiences.

LLF also maintains an online 2018 Buy Local Holiday Market calendar to help the community find and enjoy the many pop-up markets that highlight local makers and craftsmen throughout the season. The calendar runs through the end of the year and is updated regularly.

The organization makes it easy to choose local first all year long by providing “Certified Local” badges to their certified local members to display in storefront windows and entryways, as well as maintaining an online local business directory.

Why is shopping local so important? According to LLF, “when you support locally-owned businesses, 45% of those dollars spent stay within our community as opposed to only 14% when choosing to buy from non-local businesses.”

Want to join the movement? Pledge to shift 10% of your holiday spending to Local Businesses here.

To help you make that shift, visit LowcountryLocalFirst.org to browse more than 500 local-independent businesses by category, location or keyword.

Don’t forget to help LLF celebrate this year’s campaign with the Buy Local Block Party on December 8th at Tradesman Brewing Co. in downtown Charleston. The event will feature 30 local makers, artists, and craftspeople and includes live music, food trucks, and other local, non-alcoholic beverage options.
