Report: SC is America’s Worst State for Elder-Abuse Protections
Personal finance website WalletHub recently released its 2018 report on elder-abuse protections, which determined that South Carolina is the country’s worst state at protecting those aged 65 and older. On the opposite end of the list, Massachusetts was named the best state at protecting elders from abuse.
In order to determine the states with the best protection against elder abuse, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions: Prevalence, Resources, and Protection. They evaluated these dimensions using 14 relevant metrics, which were scored on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the “best protection against elder abuse.” Finally, they determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order the sample.
Here is where the Palmetto State ranked in some of these categories:

- 50th – Elder-Abuse, Gross-Neglect & Exploitation Complaints*
