Press Release

Described by the Charleston City Paper as the “Alt-Nutcracker,” Ballet Evolution’s production of “The Snow Queen” returns just in time to celebrate the holiday season!

Based on the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, “The Snow Queen” follows the beautiful young Gerda on her journey to rescue her true love Kai from the Snow Queen’s ice palace filled with mischievous goblins and dancing snowflakes. With the help of a friendly and energetic Blackbird, Gerda meets the Spring Sorceress and her garden of magical flowers, the Summer Princess and her court of palace maidens, and the Autumn Gypsy Queen’s band of thieves.

This whimsical production is brought to life with choreography by SC Arts Commission’s 2017 Fellowship winner, and Ballet Evolution artistic director, Jonathan Tabbert. The talented professional dancers of Ballet Evolution are joined by over 50 hand-picked young dancers from the Charleston community, while the musicians of Chamber Music Charleston perform an emotional arrangement featuring the compositions of Dvorák, Saint-Saëns, Respighi, Gaubert, Milhaud, and Dubois. Along with lavish stage designs, this production will delight all of your senses, and is sure to be a hit for the whole family!

Ballet Evolution brought a new artistic voice to Charleston audiences with a diverse opening season in 2015. This ground breaking arts organization continues to act as a hub for the creation of new dance works and musical compositions. Ballet Evolution will provide the highest level of quality public performances to provide an essential dance experience for patrons and enhance the current arts atmosphere of our community. Our unique programming breaks boundaries in the Charleston arts scene with seamless integration of dance, live music, and story to implement a process that revives and reinvigorates a classical arts model. Audiences claim us to be Charleston’s newest artistic gem in a city known for its dedication to arts and culture.
