Charleston Heritage Federation Announces Winter Event Lineup

The Charleston Heritage Federation (CHF), comprised of nine historical landmarks, plantations, museums and houses, brings an abundance of events to the Charleston area this winter. From craft workshops to art exhibits and wine tastings with dreamy backdrops, guests can savor the season with a collection of culturally enriching events geared towards locals and visitors of all ages.

Visitors can experience all nine Charleston Heritage Federation sites for one low price with the CHF Passport, now available for purchase online at www.heritagefederation.org.

“Poinsettias- The Charleston Connection”: Joseph Manigault House

December 1-31, 2018

Each year, the Garden Club of Charleston uses the magnificent Joseph Manigault House as a backdrop for their creative arrangements, using only plant material that would have been available in the Lowcountry during the first quarter of the 19th century. The House is decorated to depict a certain theme every year and this year the theme will be “Poinsettias- The Charleston Connection,” honoring Joel Poinsett. Charleston Collects- South Asian Art: Gibbes Museum of Art

December 1, 2018 – February 17, 2019

Debuting the Charleston Collects series, this exhibition features selections from a major private collection of South Asian art in Charleston. From examples of early medieval Buddhist bronze to paintings by artists from the courts of the Muslim Mughal emperors, this collection represents the region’s diverse sources and traditions. Candlelight Tour of the Edmondston-Alston House

December 14, 2018 & January 4, 2019 / 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Guests can enjoy a unique evening visit to the Edmondston-Alston House on Charleston’s historic Battery and see the house lit solely by candlelight with its mid-19th century holiday decor. Stationed throughout the house, docents will share the history of those that called 21 East Battery home. Enjoy light refreshments at the end of your self-led tour. Christmas Candlelight & Sarah Rutledge Dinner: Middleton Place

December 21 & 29, 2018 / 5:30-7:30 p.m.

This holiday season, families and friends can enjoy a candlelight visit to the Middleton Place House Museum and then stroll over to the Middleton Place Restaurant for dinner. Guests can take a self-guided tour of the House Museum decorated for the holidays with guides stationed in each room. The menu at the Restaurant will include dishes inspired by Sarah Rutledge’s The Carolina Housewife, a cookbook published in 1847 that includes many recipes popular in the early 19th century. Lying in Wait- Sporting Art by Ogden M. Pleissner: Gibbes Museum of Art

January 18 – May 12, 2019

Ogden Pleissner was a master of the watercolor medium and Lying in Wait celebrates his life and work as a noted sporting arts painter. His hunting, fishing and landscape paintings reflect his deep reverence for wildlife and the natural world. The forty-eight watercolors on view depict scenes from Wyoming to Maine to the South Carolina coast during his illustrious career that spanned from the late 1920s until his death in 1983. Women’s History Month Tours: Joseph Manigault House

March 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31, 2019

In celebration of Women’s History Month, a special tour will be offered every Sunday in March at 2 p.m. to focus on the lives of the women who made history at the Joseph Manigault House. Learn about Charlotte Drayton Manigault, her daughter Ann, her slave Affy and the daily lives of ladies of the early 1800s. Hear the stories of how the house was saved by Susan Pringle Frost, Nell McColl Pringle and Princess Henrietta Pignatelli. Guests will also have the opportunity to view images and hear stories of the house when it was used as a Red Cross Training Facility, women’s dormitory and USO post during World War II. Festival of Houses & Gardens Kick Off

The Historic Charleston Foundation kicks off its 72nd annual Festival of Houses & Gardens on March 13 running for five glorious weeks through April 18, 2019. More than 100 historic houses and gardens will be on display in a series of tours that put visitors in touch with Charleston’s distinctive history and singular present. The Festival of Houses & Gardens raises funds for the Foundation’s preservation initiatives, which help sustain a built environment that makes Charleston unlike any other historic city.  For more information, visit www.historiccharleston.com/festival. $55/person
